In 1946, just after WW II, my mother and father, Rosina and Louis J. Scaramelli Jr., had a dream of starting their own food business. Since my father had a strong taste for olives, my parents decided to import olives from Spain. They packed their olives into glass jars ranging in size from 2 ounces to gallons, and distributed their new product to wholesalers and independent jobbers.
They started their dream in a very small 2,900 sq. Ft. Building located in Long Island City. In addition to the Spanish olives, the product line grew to consist of pimientos, olives and olive oil. It was at that time my mother chose 'Table Joy' as the brand name, since she felt that olives had always been the joy of the table.
Growing up in the olive business was tough, as all the manufacturing was done by hand. This consisted of dumping olives onto a huge table filled with glass jars, then adding salt and brine, capping, washing and finally labeling each jar manually.
As L & S Packing company began packing for some of the finest chain stores and institutional houses in the country with both Table Joy and private label brands, demand for our products increased. Therefore, in 1959 out of a need for a larger facility we moved into a 25,000 sq. Ft. Building in Flushing, New York. Our much larger plant along with automated equipment had enabled us to offer our customers a complete line of condiments including Spanish green olives, black olives, Greek olives, oil cured olives, Sicilian olives, maraschino cherries, imported pickled button mushrooms, sweet midget gherkins, cocktail onions, capers, giardiniera and Greek pepperoncini; all of which are packed under the certification of the Kof-K. Then, as now, quality has always been #1 in the products we pack.
It doesn't stop there. In 1994 we moved into an even larger facility in East Farmingdale, Long Island. This 75,000 sq. Ft. Building with extremely automated equipment and capacity enabled L & S Packing company to diversify into new and exciting gourmet products. This led to the redevelopment of 'Paesana'. Paesana was originated by my great grandfather, Luigi J. Scaramelli Sr., Who in 1902 founded the renown Scaramelli & Co., A wholesale grocery business that imported the finest Italian cheeses, condiments, and olive oil in Boston and New York.
Today, our family has brought the tradition of Paesana back to life with the amicable Paesana lady; friendly, warm, and caring; the nature of the Scaramelli family. This portrait is gorgeous, charming & irresistible! A family portrait dating back to the early 1900'S . You can't miss the beautiful cameo of this peasant lady on the front of the striking yet classic label. The Paesana line has taken years to develop the best packaging, utmost quality, gourmet presentation, and service. The initial time taken in designing the artwork for these labels was the critical factor as well as duplicating our savory homemade family recipes and packing them into jars for the public to enjoy. The careful selection of the finest ingredients and packaging is what makes an item branded 'Paesana'.
